Gutters

Gutters & Downspouts in Barrington, NJ

A roof is only as good as the route the water takes off it. Overflowing gutters rot fascia, soak foundations and back ice up under the first courses every winter.

What usually goes wrong

Pitch, more often than anything else. A trough that falls the wrong way holds water, gets heavy, pulls its hangers out of the fascia and then overflows at exactly the point where it is doing the most harm. Second to that is discharge: a downspout that ends in a splash block two feet from the wall is simply moving the problem. Blockages matter, but a gutter that is correctly pitched and properly hung copes with a surprising amount of debris before it fails.

What we do

  • Re-pitch and re-hang

Fall corrected and hangers set into sound timber at proper centres.

  • Seamless replacement

Run to length on site so the only joints are at the corners and the outlets.

  • Downspout routing

Enough outlets for the roof area, discharging far enough out to matter.

  • Fascia repair

Rotten board behind the gutter replaced first, because nothing hangs properly off soft wood.

  • Drip edge

Fitted so water leaves the covering into the trough rather than behind it.

  • Guards, where they help

Useful under heavy tree cover, pointless on an open roof, and we will tell you which you have.

Gutters and winter

Ice at the eaves is a ventilation and insulation problem before it is a gutter problem, but a full, badly pitched trough makes it considerably worse by holding a dam in place. If you get ice every year we will look at the attic as well as the gutter, because replacing the trough alone will not change anything. That check is part of the free inspection rather than an extra.

When to have it done

With the roof, if the roof is going on soon: the drip edge and the first courses go in together and the whole edge detail ends up right. On its own, early autumn is the sensible window, before the leaves and well before the first freeze. Either way we price it in writing and nothing starts until you have read it.

Start with the free inspection

We come out, go over the roof properly and leave you with a written figure. Nothing is charged for that and nothing is booked off the back of it.
